How to Prepare Your Baby for a Edmonton Newborn Photography Session

Updated: Oct 22, 2023

Tips to help you get a smooth Edmonton newborn photography session.

As a new parent, you want to capture every precious moment of your newborn's life. One of the best ways to do this is by scheduling a newborn photography session with Little One Studio. This way, you can get nice and professional photos of your little one without stressing yourself out, even when you're tired from taking care of a newborn.

As a newborn photographer in Edmonton, we always try to get the baby to sleep during the session. So they give us the womb posture when they relax. Hoping your baby will fall into a deep sleep during a photo shoot without preparation can be a gamble. Here are some tips on how to get your little one ready for their close-up.

Tip #1 - Bathe before the Edmonton newborn photography session

It's essential to bathe your baby 1-2 hours before the newborn photography session so they are clean and comfortable. A warm bath is helpful to wake your baby up. Don't worry if they have flaky skin, just lotion them up after their bath (non-oily lotion).

Tip #2 - Feed the baby right before leaving

A well-fed baby is a happy baby. Feeding your baby right before leaving for the photo shoot can help them fall into a deep sleep while you driving to the studio. Also, it's nice to make mama feel comfortable to feed the baby at your home especially if you are still learning to breastfeed your little one. A sleeping baby is easier to pose, and it can lead to some of the most adorable photos.

Once you have finished feeding, please put the baby in their car seat in as little clothing as possible (diaper only, snap-together shirt or onesie) and cover in a blanket (weather permitting). This allows your baby to enjoy the ride over to the studio and arrive in a deep sleep.

Tip #3 - Bring a pacifier

Pacifiers are an excellent tool for calming fussy babies. They can also help me adjust the baby's position without waking them up. If your baby doesn't use a pacifier yet, you might want to consider bringing one just for the photo shoot. I know some of my clients have been told by their doctor to not use the pacifier if they are breastfeeding. It's totally up to you to decide if you would like to use one or not. Usually only using it for a few minutes within 2 hours should be fine. If you decide to not use it, I will handle the baby to mama every time when they are looking for comfort.

Tip #4 - Preparing more than enough milk

If you are feeding formula or bottle-feeding breast milk please bring at least 8oz of extra food. I know that sounds like a lot, but modelling is super hard work and babies tend to work up an appetite looking so adorable! The idea behind this very important step is to exhaust our little models, stuff them like a Thanksgiving turkey, and allow them to drift off into a deep, deep sleep that we only dream of!

The very last thing I'm always doing is scheduling the newborn photography session time at the baby's bedtime. I know you only met the baby for a few days so far. But all the babies tend to have their own biological clock. So, taking photos during their regular sleep time should be much easier for the baby to relax for us.
